It was just announced on several Arabic media that Khairat al-Shater, the deputy leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, has just been arrested. Al-Shater’s importance to the group cannot be overestimated. Long considered the true mover and shaker of the organization, it was widely believed that he gave ousted President Morsi his orders; even U.S. ambassador Anne Patterson went to his private residence to discuss politics — which opponents pointed to as evidence that Morsi was al-Shater’s “puppet.”
Yet another powerful blow to the Brotherhood, whose key figures continue falling like dominos.
